Why it's in the news
After President Trump said AI should be called "super intelligence" (SI) and signed an executive order to rebrand it across the federal government, Slovenia's .si domain saw a rush of registrations. A viral reel cited openai.si as proof that big AI companies were buying .si names overnight.
The .si registry says otherwise: openai.si was registered on 7 January 2025, more than a year and a half before the rebrand. The public record shows the registrar, not the owner, so there's no evidence that OpenAI itself holds it.
What it means if you want it
It matches the OpenAI trademark, so it isn't a name for anyone else to acquire. Domain disputes over brand names usually go to the trademark owner.
